How to Prevent Sump Pump Failure

One of the best ways to prevent water damage as a result of sump pump failure is to routinely check the pump, the power and to install a back up battery in the event of a power outage.

Most sump pump failures happen as a result of power outages during a storm. As a water restoration company serving the Bucks and Montgomery County area, we’ve seen our fair share of sump pump failures.

A few things to take a look at when developing a regular maintenance plan are:

Plumbing

Check the plumbing to ensure all connections tn the PVC are secure. If your sump pump is not connected with PVC pipe, replace the flex tubing with PVC to ensure a long lasting drainage system. Take a look at the way redundant systems are installed and make sure the water has a clear path directly outside in the event one pump fails but the other remains operational. You want to avoid re-cycling the water back into the sump pit.

Power & Electric

Ensure the sump pump(s) are plugged in and have dedicated power. You don’t want to overload the breaker responsible for keeping the water out of your finished/unfinished basement. Install backup batteries in the event of a power outage and make sure the battery is properly rated for the size pump that you have. Notate the run-time of the battery and consider keeping a spare somewhere close by but at least 3 feet off the ground.

Float Valve Maintenance

Depending on the sump pit, the location of your property, and age of the pump, the float that triggers the on/off switch can become dirty and/or rusted. It may be a good idea to check the float valve assembly regularly to make sure it is not weighted down or in need of replacement. Check and make sure the inlet/outlet valves are free from debris and left unclogged as this will affect performance of the pump.

Early Warning Systems

With the advancement of technology, specifically wifi and bluetooth, sensors have become more accessible and available for use in early detection systems. Bulldog® typically recommends purchasing a “water puck” which can be placed under sinks, in wall cavities and around the base of sump pumps and hot water heaters. These “water pucks” will be able to notify you in the event of standing water or plumbing leak. Depending on the product, you can even have real time alerts sent directly to your mobile device! These “water pucks” can assist you in quickly responding and preventing large scale water damages.
